Mr. Asquith (Earl of Oxford and Asquith 1925) as a Liberal had been Home Secretary in Gladstone's government in 1892 and in Rosebery's in 1894 and Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1905-8 before becoming Prime Minister in 1908.
